PORTRAITS
S.Brooke Anderson Artist Statement

My recent portraiture work explores the faces of people from all walks of life brought to the leveling experience of migration to the new world. Inspired by archival photographs from the late 1800's and early 1900's, I feel that these faces tell a story and are reflective of the full spectrum of our human experience. My subject's faces are a poignant contrast of optimism and sorrow: the promise of a new life is measured against the sorrow of the realization of loved ones left behind.

I endeavor to examine the individual journey--a journey filled with shared hopes and common experiences that connect us. As I paint these portraits, I look at the faces of my subjects and ask Who were you? Who were your ancestors? Who did you leave behind when you left your homeland? What were your struggles? What were your triumphs? These are faces that I need to paint.
